A small suggestion: Look for other scenes with close-ups of the ponies in case you need a closer look of a background.

nowadays, Adobe products are free on the Internet via torrents. lol
concerning low anti-aliasing on AI and PS, i don't care but i could always use Inkscape only for this purpose

When you (and others) complain about Inkscape swatches I assume you mean swatches created within Inkscape (i.e. clicking the swatch button in the fill dialogue) as these turn out as what look like gradients with only one colour. Using a custom GPL palette, or one of those supplied with Inkscape, shouldn't cause any issues (despite being displayed in the swatch dialogue).

Or am I wrong?

That sounds right. If they aren't turning in to gradients there isn't any issue.
